Description
STUDY ABROAD IS NO LONGER CONSIDERED A CUTTING-EDGE EDUCATIONAL STRATEGY IN NURSING. For years, many universities have conducted some form of the study abroad experience (Bosworth et al., 2006; Caffrey, Neander, Markle, & Stewart, 2005; Tabi & Sabarna, 2003). But due to globalization, immigration, and the fast-paced growth of ethnic diversity within the United States (Cuellar, Brennan, Vito, & de Leon Siantz, 2008), this curricular option warrants examination. Campinha-Bacote (2003) noted that cultural desire, defined as "nurses' motivation to 'want to' engage in the process of becoming culturally aware, culturally knowledgeable, and culturally skillful, and seeking cultural encounters" (p. 239), must drive cultural competence. A short-term study abroad immersion experience provides nurse educators with a means to develop in students a desire to become culturally astute.
